Wellington Phoenix memberships hit record high

Membership has reached an all-time high for the Phoenix with numbers rocketing past last season’s record total to go to over 4,400 yesterday.

“Our highest number of memberships ever really shows the support we have for the Wellington Phoenix here in the city and around the world,” Mr Dome says. “We are humbled by how many individuals and organisations have come on board to Save the Nix.”

On the back of two social media campaigns – #SavetheNix and #scarfwellington and with efforts boosted by city identities including Deputy-Mayor Justin Lester and Westpac Stadium boss Shane Harmon – the Club and its supporters have been going all out to let people know the Phoenix are playing this Friday night.

Mr Lester and Mr Harmon were joined by the Yellow Fever supporters club to “scarf-bomb” the city showing support for the ‘Nix’ on Sunday night.

Major landmarks including the Railway Station, Basin Reserve, Bucket Fountain and motorway overbridges were draped with yellow and black scarves ahead of commuters arriving into the city Monday morning.

“The Wellington Phoenix is such an important part of our city” says Mr Lester. “Wellington has such a strong sporting heritage and football is a key part of that. If ever there was a time to rally together as a city to fight for a team, it’s now.”

The Phoenix has been in the spotlight since the A-League’s parent body,  Football Federation Australia (FFA) refused to grant the club a long-term licence.

Mr Dome says the strong membership sales need to be matched by a good crowd this Friday night.

“We are still fighting for survival and we  need a good crowd to be at the game on Friday night to show that we mean business. If you have thought of coming along and are interested to see what all the fuss is about – give it a go this week. We can promise a fantastic experience and one that’s suitable for families.”

The Wellington Phoenix plays their next home game on Friday November 13, 7:30pm at Westpac Stadium. Tickets start at $10 for Adults and $2 for Children and can be bought at www.prod.wellingtonphoenix.aleagues.com.au
