A gritty, determined, gutsy effort by the Wellington Phoenix saw them win their opening game of Hyundai A-League Season 2018/19 over last season’s Grand Finalist Newcastle Jets 2-1.
The vocal, colourful crowd of 9,174 added to the history created by the team on Sunday afternoon – the first home win since 2012/13 – and the club wants to show their appreciation by jackpotting the club’s “Cash The Gate” promotion.
General Manager David Dome said the club was so pleased by the effort the crowd put in in helping get the team home, that they are going to jackpot the two goals scored by Wellington to the next home game.
“We were keen to give away the $10k on Sunday afternoon and we were so close at just over 9,100”, Dome said.
“So we want to keep the momentum going – and we want to say thanks to all those fans that did turn up and add so much to the game.
“So we’re going to jackpot the two goals we scored forward to the game against Western Sydney on Saturday 3 November.
“That means that we’re starting from a base of $12,000 – plus any goals scored on the night and any hat tricks.
“We really want to give the money away – we just need 10,000 people there to trigger it!”
The Wellington Phoenix’ next home game is against Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday 3 November, kick off at 7.35pm.
