The Wellington Phoenix Reserves hosted Waitakere United on a wet and windy day in the capital. Both teams headed into the game after disappointing starts to their campaigns with Waitakere having conceded 5 goals in their opening two matches of the 2018/19 ISPS Handa Premiership.

Waitakere started off the stronger side with Ollie Bassett finding himself an opening and he took the opportunity well, slotting the ball low and hard past Zac Jones.

In the 31st minute Waitakere United again scored from a good counter attack with Alex Connor-McClean scoring at Jones’s near post with the ball yet again going past the Phoenix Reserves goalkeeper.

In the 43rd minute The Wellington Phoenix Reserves gave away a penalty with Ronan Wynne bringing down their last man resulting in Calvin Berg awarding Waitakere a penalty and showing Wynne a red card. The penalty was then taken with Eder Franchini slotting away his effort comfortably to make the score 3-0 to Waitakere.

In the 55th minute the home side continued their great start to the second half with a brilliant free kick from Calvin Harris bending around the wall into the bottom left corner yet again showing his class and making the score 3-1 giving the Phoenix Reserves hope of getting a result.

Jake Butler put the game to bed in the 80th minute with his effort bending around the wall to the bottom left corner just out of Jones’s reach making the score line 4-1 to Waitakere.

Moments after Butler scored a brilliant free kick Abba scored yet another goal from a tight angle slotting his effort across goal into the bottom right corner to make the score 5-1.
