Plotlines abound as Ernie Merrick and Carlos Hernandez return to Melbourne in enemy colours for the first time tonight.
Merrick won two titles and Hernandez one during their long and successful stints with the Victory and neither man will lack for motivation when the Phoenix visit Etihad Stadium.
Hernandez parted ways with the Victory last year after being unable to reach terms with former boss Ange Postecoglou, while foundation coach Merrick was unceremoniously dumped in 2011 following a 5-1 Asian Champions League loss to Gamba Osaka.
