The 21-year-old, Reno Piscopo is one of 14 players selected in the squad from the Hyundai A-League, after his first call-up to the Olyroos in November this year.

Coach Ufuk Talay says that he’s very happy for Piscopo and the opportunities this call-up brings for him.

”While naturally it’s disappointing to have a key player like Reno away from the Phoenix for the month of January, at the same time it’s great exposure for him to play international football – we’re always very proud of our players when they get selected to play for their country.”

”I’m also very happy that we have the type of depth in our squad that can cover for Piscopo while he competes overseas with his fellow countrymen.”

The team will depart for a brief pre-tournament training camp in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, playing an international friendly against Korea Republic in Malaysia’s capital on Friday afternoon (local time), before traveling to Bangkok on Saturday for Group A games against Iraq, Thailand, and Bahrain.

The top three teams at the AFC U-23 Championship Thailand 2020 will join Japan as Asia’s representatives in the Men’s football competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
