Phoenix Family Day Goes Off

The Phoenix held their annual family day at Waitangi Park and over 5,000 fans turned up to see to participate in the fun and see the announcement of Huawei as the club’s new principle partner.

The Phoenix held their annual family day at Waitangi Park and over 5,000 fans turned up to participate in the fun and see the announcement of Huawei as the club’s new principle partner.

Estimated at between 5,000 and 7,500, the annual Family Day was held at the central city venue of Waitangi Park.

Announced on the day was the new principal partner Huawei, joining existing partners Nova Energy, adidas and Revera.

The new season strip was unveiled for the first time, with Huawei proudly emblazoned across the front.

Along with with player appearances there was Mojo coffee, Stretch Tents, the Phoenix’s charity partner Surf Lifesaving, bouncy castles and face painting for the kids, and adidas a with a huge screen playing Xbox for the young at heart.

Phoenix General Manager David Dome said the club was thrilled with the turnout.

“You never know with Wellington weather, showers one minute, fine the next. But we were blessed with fine and sunny weather, and Wellingtonians turned out en masse to support the Club and see Huawei and the new 13/14 strip unveiled for the first time” Dome said.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the turnout – there were queues at some stations and the players and Ernie (Merrick, Head Coach) were delighted by the show of support and the terrific atmosphere.

“We couldn’t be happier”.

Wellington City Council officials who were there on the day to help in the management and oversee the event estimated the crowd at between 5,000 and 7,500 – easily the best pre-season crowd the club has had.
