The Central Coast Mariners are looking forward to showing off their new high-profile signing Luis Garcia when they take on the Wellington Phoenix at Christchurch’s AMI Stadium on Saturday night.

The former Spanish international, who represented his country at the 2006 World Cup played for Atletico Madrid and Barcelona in La Liga before joining Liverpool where he was in the English club’s Champions League winning side.

Mariners chief executive Shaun Mielekamp is delighted to have secured Garcia’s signature.

"This signing of Luis Garcia is not just a coup for the Central Coast Mariners but also the Hyundai A-League," Mielekamp said.

"It's great that the people of Christchurch have the chance to see a legend of world football play in their backyards which is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"Luis Garcia will be making the trip Christchurch and we urge all football and even non-football fans to get out there and witness a piece of football history in New Zealand."
