Wellington Phoenix fans can dare to dream again.
OK, they were pre-season friendlies but two impressive team performances against English Premier League clubs have revived hopes for supporters who have struggled to find reasons for cheer throughout the past two A-League seasons.
The upset 2-1 win over West Ham could not be repeated but Saturday's 1-0 loss to Newcastle at Westpac Stadium showed Ernie Merrick's men have the ability to trouble even the best sides with a high-tempo, pressing system.
''I found it funny actually that the goalkeeper, with 5-10 minutes to go, was actually wasting time,'' Merrick said.
''So I thought that was pretty good respect - if he's wasting time, an EPL side against a bunch of A-League players.''
