Now that’s how you repay a favour.
The Wellington Phoenix’s Costa Rican connection rewarded the club for its generosity with football’s most valuable currency – goals – in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat of Adelaide United at Eden Park.
Carlos Hernandez and Kenny Cunningham had missed the previous 2-1 loss to Brisbane Roar as the Phoenix allowed them to chase their World Cup dreams by playing for Costa Rica in friendlies against Chile and South Korea.
There was no obligation to release them, with the games falling outside a Fifa window.
